RULES OF COMPETITION

1 – Announcement

Euronautics srl hereby announces the “1st Euronautics Design Competition”, focusing on Automotive Vehicle Design for the future of 360 degrees sustainable mobility.

2 – Vision & theme

The automotive mobility is experiencing the deepest revolution it has ever seen since its beginning. These changes are mainly driven by a better environmental awareness all over the world, which is turning into “normal” thinking concepts such as low- or zero-emissions, utilization of natural resources, energy generation and availability, cost.

However, some other aspects are not stressed as strongly, such as ethics behind availability of some materials, labor conditions in some areas where these materials come from, full-life impact of the vehicle (from its fabrication to end of life), net waste of the vehicle after its service.

All the above need to co-exist with the needs of the users, which want (and deserve) cheap, roomy, and life-easy cars for their daily activities such as commute to work, shopping, taxing of kids in their many activities. In the 1980’s, this mission was well interpreted by two symbol European cars: Fiat Panda and Renault 4.

Theme of this contest is to imagine the exterior and interior design of a 21st century car, taking the inheritance of these two iconic vehicles.

The following list summarizes the requirements that the car shall fulfill, which the proposed design shall fit into:

  • Compact: the car shall fit in the “city car” or “compact car” market segment. Technical data relevant to this aspect may be found in Section 4 of this document.
  • Roomy: the car shall be thought for comfortable access and seat of four adults and enough storage space for two sports bags.
  • Recyclable: the battery system Euronautics is planning to use for this vehicle is 100% recyclable. Not 99%, it actually is 100%. For this reason, all the materials intended to be used for the rest of the build shall comply with this requirement. It would be beneficial if recycled materials are foreseen to be used in the vehicle.
  • Slow and relaxed: just like the Panda or the R4, the vehicle will be moved by a small motor of 30 HP. This will make it move slowly in the town traffic, requiring a non-aggressive driving approach. The electric motor and the battery system are completely maintenance free. Finally, the energy storage is such to allow to use the car during the everyday activities, and just recharge it during the night, in a common household socket, kind of what happens for a cell phone. All the above being said, the car design shall remind of a stress-free way of living, which is the only choice for the sustainability of the future.
  • High quality waiting time: in the wake of the above, it would be advantageous if the vehicle encloses features which increase the quality of the time spent in the parked car (e.g. waiting for the kids to get out of school or gym). Again, just being and staying in the vehicle shall be a pleasant experience for the occupants, not a waste of time.

The target for being successful in this contest is to create a design that fits into our vision of the city-car of the future.

3 – Participants

Any natural person or legal entity may present their candidacy, as an individual or as a group. Participation to the competition is free of any charge by the participant.

4 – Presentation rules & technical constraints

The presentation of the project shall fulfil the following rules:

  • The Project must be written in English.
  • The Project shall be provided a distinctive name.
  • Mention of possible production technologies used to obtain the proposed design shall be valued.
  • Projects must be delivered on a single pdf file, size A3, with a resolution of 300px minimum.

Projects shall be comprised of the following sections:

  1. Abstract

The Abstract is the deliverable that covers the story on which the project is based, as well as the number of explanations necessary to facilitate its understanding.

This section of the project shall contain at least one sheet.

  1. Mood-board (Inspiration Panel)

The Mood-board or Inspiration Panel is the section that graphically represents a study of the conceptual line of the vehicle, indicating the direction of vehicle exterior and interior aesthetic finishes.

This section of the project shall contain at least one sheet.

  1. Vehicle exteriors

This section of the project shall contain at least two sheets with different views of the vehicle exteriors. It is preferred, but not mandatory, that the full creation process is explained starting from the hand sketches through the final design. The final design can be hand sketched, made through computer graphics, rendered from a 3D, any combination of the above, or obtained by any other graphical means.

  1. Vehicle interiors

This section of the project shall contain at least two sheets with different views of the vehicle interiors. It is preferred, but not mandatory, that the full creation process is explained starting from the hand sketches through the final design. The means to produce the graphics of this Section follow the same rules as for the Vehicle exteriors. In this Section, the features making the vehicle suitable with the “High quality waiting time”, if present, shall be presented.

  1. Material pattern

In this section, the materials to be used to fulfill the recyclability requirement, or the “stress-free way of living” requirement shall be identified and be given explanation of. Preferred materials shall have natural derivation.

This section of the project shall contain at least one sheet.

The following technical data shall be notionally accounted for. This does not means that the figures shall be demonstrated to be fulfilled, however the proposed design shall be consistent with them.

  • The vehicle shall have a wheelbase not longer than 2.3 meters, and an overall length of maximum 3.6 meters. No limitation is given on the height of the vehicle, nor on its width.
  • The car powertrain is small, however room needed for battery allocation is quite large: battery volume shall be in excess of 300 liters, battery height is 320 millimeters.
  • The preferred location for the batteries is on the floor of the vehicle. This shall be accounted for when addressing positions of seating and driving.

5 – Project delivery

Project shall be delivered via Google module, accessible via a dedicated link available at https://www.euronautics.com/design-contest/

6 – Project submission deadline

The project presentation period ends on Tuesday, 31st January 2023.

Projects submitted for competition shall not be returned nor shall any correspondence be entered into or any information be provided about them.

7 – Guarantees provided by the participant

The competition participant certifies and guarantees to Euronautics srl the following:
